International Marriage (continued)

A couple of years back, my EWS group discussed international marriage and one of the exchange students, Marcella from Ecuador, asked me to make some comments on my own 27-year long marriage to an Indonesia national. This is the resulting podcast.

  1. We will get a lot of new culture things and perspectives when we get older. When we enter a new age for us to get married, this experience of getting new perspectives about the cultural standard will show us the future of the open world. A marriage or even a international marriage come from deep love and clearly shown by living the experience of love openly to all the differences that exist. Love is everything in this situation. No matter where we live, no matter how our economic condition, no matter our background like, while we are with our partner, we are already in the right place, we are already with the right person. An international marriage wasn’t a cultural pressure. It’s all about the flow of doing those what we love with our partner. From international marriage, we will get so many experiences, so many affections, so many good things, because we are all happy doing what we love with our lover. It’s all about open minded situation, accept difference with love and live it as a international couple.

  2. This certainly put things into a new perspective for me. I had never once thought about the prospect of entering into an international or interracial marriage. I mean, yes, I’m young so I don’t think much about marriage yet, but being in an international marriage in particular has never once crossed my mind. I think this is mostly because of the cultural divide that surely wouldn’t be easy to overcome. If ever I entered into an international marriage, the culture of his family and mine would be worlds apart. And its this divide that makes me feel afraid for the long-term state of our marriage. However, listening to you as you talked about your own personal experience entering into an international marriage, I see that a happy, harmonious international marriage is very much possible if we were truly open-minded, communicative, honest and willing to try hard with our spouse.

  3. International Marriage is a new age phenomenon that people of various countries who want to participate in marital alliance are gradually embracing. I have always found international romantic relationships– let alone a marriage. The idea of integrating two cultures together into one household is both fascinating and inconvenient. Children who grew up in a multicultural household have the advantage of being exposed to different ways of living and values. However, these values might clash one another when their parents are not able to organize them properly. One partner might feel culturally intimidated by the other and feel like they're inferior, while the other might have a normal tendency to put their cultural values first. Moreover, although an international marriage might drive its children to be more culturally exposed, one culture might overshadow the other and it will in the end beat the purpose. This is rather a common case for my mixed-race friends as they had English as their first language and neglected the other language.
